SOPA = Danger [POLITIC WARNING]
It has been brought to my attention that these bills no longer pose such a threat. After re-reading the current version of the bills on govtrack/loc.gov, I do not believe their current form posse any more of a threat than existing copyright laws at this point. Futhermore, the bills were essentially killed by the blackout.

It has also been brought to my attention that much of the complaints against this bill were exaggerated and kept circulating long after they became misinformation. While the fear of these bills seems to have been (and in some cases still be) at least partially justified, much of the original information is likely not true. As such, I have quoted my original post (so it is still available and visible, not hidden whatsoever, but also able to be separated from the more up-to-date information).

Original Text Wrote:Alright, I've refrained so far from spreading my political views over here or to any of my sites -they're not political in nature and I didn't see a need. This particular issue, however, can directly effect this site.

I am a US citizen (though I would love to disavow this government). I am also aware of other US citizens on this forum. Our government, despite major opposition to the bill so far, is working on bills that would effectively censor the internet. The bills are the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP act (PIPA). As it stands, SOPA is looking more promising to pass, and we have even apparently started threatening other countries (see here).

If this bill passes in anything similar to it's current form, ANY website that so much as links to copyrighted material could be forced to close or else be censored in the entire country. What does that mean? That means that if there is a single lyric quote, link to music or film, image or link to image, or anything else that has a copyright attached to it the site could be taken down immediately. As it is written, it would require the owners of the domain/site to PROVE they are innocent in order to get it back up. This would not be a few hour blackout, but an all-out removal of the site. The very site you're reading this on could easily be taken down - all they have to do is claim some copyright is violated.

Furthermore, if this isn't important enough to you, similar stands for the following sites:
Facebook
Twitter
Youtube
Search engines including Google, Yahoo, and Bing...actually any (if they don't censor your results)

RE: SOPA = Danger [POLITIC WARNING]
William, I'm pretty sure they realize we socialize online and simply don't care. Many of the officials and current candidates use some of those same sites to promote themselves. I've written congress and got a response back about them basically saying that they realize it's extremely controversial and then only continuing with typical responses that sound to me more like their job description.

Still, I'm not suggesting stopping. EMAIL CONGRESS! Tell them your opinion. Look up the bills yourself (Links: Govtrack SOPA, LOC SOPA). Look up Protect IP Act (PIPA) as well if you're ambitious. Sign petitions against them.

Then, when you get sick of them not listening to you... there's always occupy. Or don't go to them, that's up to you...but the government not listening does kinda reiterate some of their points if you think about it.

RE: SOPA = Danger [POLITIC WARNING]
Actually, I can name some things he's done to help the country...but I can also name one MAJOR thing he did that has the potential to more than hurt it. That's not the point though - they've ALL quit representing people. They represent the corporate powers that buy them off.

And speaking of corporations...here's a list of things to AVOID due to their support of SOPA:

ABC
CBS
Comcast (they've censored their internet for a while to be honest)
ESPN
L’Oreal
MPAA (Motion Picture Association, the ones who make the most from any movie you buy)
Revlon
Scholastic, Inc.
Time Warner (WB, Kids WB, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and more)
Visa
Mastercard
and of course there are more...Full List

On a more positive note, here are some AGAINST the act:
eBay
Facebook
Google
Kapersky
Linkedin
Mozilla
OpenDNS
Reddit
Paypal
Tumblr
Twitter
Yahoo
Namecheap (even had a sale using SOPAsucks as the code lol <3)
ICanHasCheezburger (Cheezburger network)
4chan
source/full list

RE: SOPA = Danger [POLITIC WARNING]
You won't hear any arguments from me, William. I'm in solidarity with Occupy even though I can't physically go join them. I know they've quit listening to the people and quit representing the people. Bills with overwhelming opposition nationally pass while ones almost everyone wants to pass don't, and that's just normal stuff for them...but lately they've proven it with some of the controversial pieces of the NDAA for this year and with SOPA/PIPA they're adding more. If I didn't know better, I'd think they WANTED a bloody revolution and had completely forgotten how this country formed.
